Clopay Cable & Drum Replacement: The Oakland Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Clopay-compatible cable and drum replacements in Oakland for $130-$250 installed, and we can usually get to you same day if the door is stuck or off-track. The cable winds around the drum at each end of the torsion tube, lifting the door evenly; when one frays or a drum cracks, the door tilts, binds, or drops hard. Most Clopay owners in Oakland notice the problem when the door starts closing crooked or they spot a frayed cable loop hanging loose above the top roller.

Which Clopay Models This Applies To

Clopay uses two main drum profiles across their residential line: standard-lift drums for doors up to 8 feet tall, and high-lift or vertical-lift drums for taller openings and custom garage configurations. The part number is stamped on the drum face, usually a 4- or 5-digit code starting with 4, 5, or 8, depending on the cable groove diameter and bore size. For Clopay’s Gallery Collection, Classic Collection, and Avante aluminum doors, the drum bore is typically 1 inch to match the torsion shaft, but the older Coachman series sometimes shipped with a 25mm bore that aftermarket drums don’t fit without bushing adaptation.

We carry both OEM Clopay drums and DURA-LIFT aftermarket equivalents on our Oakland trucks. The OEM part guarantees exact groove geometry for your cable wrap, which matters on heavier Clopay insulated doors in the 150-200 pound range common in Montclair and Piedmont. Aftermarket drums save roughly $30-$50 on the part cost and carry the same 10,000-cycle rating, but we always match the groove pitch to the cable diameter, Clopay spec or not. If your door was manufactured between 2008 and 2016, check for a “Clopay” sticker inside the top section; the model prefix (GD, GR, or AV) tells us which drum family you need before we leave the warehouse.

Signs Your Clopay Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing

Signs Your Clopay Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing
  • The door closes crooked or one side hangs lower. A cracked drum slips on the torsion shaft, letting that side of the door drop faster than the other. In Oakland’s older Temescal garages with original hardware, we’ve found drums cracked clean through the hub that the owner hadn’t noticed for weeks.
  • You see frayed cable strands or a “bird’s nest” of loose wire above the roller. Cables fatigue from the repeated bend around the drum groove, especially on doors that cycle more than 4 times daily. The salt air from the Bay accelerates surface corrosion on lower-grade cables, though Clopay’s OEM galvanized cable holds up better than most.
  • The door slams shut or won’t stay open at the top of the travel. A drum with worn grooves lets the cable slip under load, so the spring torque doesn’t transfer to the door evenly. The door loses its counterbalance and gravity takes over.
  • Loud grinding or clicking when the door moves. A cracked drum hub wobbles on the shaft, and the cable rubs against the track bracket or flag angle. The noise is the cable telling you it’s being destroyed against metal it shouldn’t touch.
  • The cable jumped off the drum and the door is stuck half-open. This usually means the drum groove is worn past its retention lip, or the set screws have backed out and the drum shifted. Either way, running the opener with a loose cable will chew up the cable and the drum both.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range
Single cable replacement (one side) $130-$190
Cable & drum pair (both sides, matched) $180-$250
Emergency same-day dispatch (off-track door) No additional fee

The $130-$250 range covers the part, labor, and a full re-tension of the torsion system so the door lifts evenly again. What moves you toward the top of the range: a heavier Clopay insulated door needing thicker 1/8-inch cable, a high-lift drum configuration, or corrosion damage to the torsion shaft that needs cleaning before the new drum seats properly. We quote the exact number in writing before touching anything, per Clause 1 of The Haven Standard. The work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise, and you get the photo record showing the old drum’s part number, the crack or wear pattern we found, and the new component installed.

There’s a safe middle ground here, and then there’s the line you shouldn’t cross. You can inspect the cable for fraying from the ground with the door closed, check whether the door hangs level, and verify the drum part number if you have a stepladder and a flashlight. What you should not do: loosen the set screws on a loaded torsion shaft, try to wind or unwind cables with the spring under tension, or use pliers to force a cable back onto a drum while the door is connected to the opener. The torsion spring stores enough torque to cause serious injury if the winding bar slips or the cable snaps free.

We carry Clopay-compatible drums and cables on every Oakland truck, and we photograph the failed part before quoting the replacement, Clause 4 of The Haven Standard. Name the part. Quote the number. Do the work. Call (628) 300-0423 and we’ll pick up, day or night.
