Signs Your Clopay Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing

• The door closes crooked or one side hangs lower. A cracked drum slips on the torsion shaft, letting that side of the door drop faster than the other. • You see frayed cable strands or a “bird’s nest” of loose wire above the roller. Cables fatigue from the repeated bend around the drum groove, especially on doors that cycle more than 4 times daily. • Loud grinding or clicking when the door moves. A cracked drum hub wobbles on the shaft, and the cable rubs against the track bracket or flag angle. The noise is the cable telling you it’s being destroyed against metal it shouldn’t touch.
• The cable jumped off the drum and the door is stuck half-open. This usually means the drum groove is worn past its retention lip, or the set screws have backed out and the drum shifted. Either way, running the opener with a loose cable will chew up the cable and the drum both.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground here, and then there’s the line you shouldn’t cross. You can inspect the cable for fraying from the ground with the door closed, check whether the door hangs level, and verify the drum part number if you have a stepladder and a flashlight. What you should not do: loosen the set screws on a loaded torsion shaft, try to wind or unwind cables with the spring under tension, or use pliers to force a cable back onto a drum while the door is connected to the opener. The torsion spring stores enough torque to cause serious injury if the winding bar slips or the cable snaps free.
