Genie Cable & Drum Replacement: The Oakland Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Genie-compatible cable and drum assemblies for all current and most legacy Genie opener systems, with typical installed pricing in Oakland running $130-$250 for cable repair and $180-$340 when drum replacement is bundled with cable service. Same-day availability is standard for Genie parts we carry on the truck, which covers the majority of residential screw-drive, chain-drive, and belt-drive units in the field. Most owners discover this failure when the door hangs crooked, won’t lift evenly, or slams shut on one side - the cable has slipped off the drum or frayed through, and the drum itself may be grooved or cracked where the cable rides.

Which Genie Models This Applies To

Genie has used three primary cable and drum configurations across its residential line, and matching the right assembly matters more than with some other brands because Genie’s drum geometry changed noticeably between the ReliaG, IntelliG, and current Aladdin Connect-era screw-drive systems. The drum diameter, cable length, and anchor point style must match the opener’s travel rail length and the door’s weight class.

Current production units - the ChainLift, BeltLift, and TriloG series - use a standardized 4-inch drum with 1/8-inch galvanized aircraft cable in 102-inch or 120-inch lengths depending on 7-foot or 8-foot door height. Legacy screw-drive units from the 1990s through mid-2000s, including the ProMax and PowerLift lines, used a slightly smaller 3.5-inch drum with a different cable anchor clip that is not interchangeable. The label on the opener motor head lists the model number; the drum itself, if visible, will have a casting number on the hub face.

We carry OEM Genie drums and cables for current-series units, plus quality aftermarket equivalents from DDM Garage Doors and Garage Door Supply Company that meet the same 7×19 strand count and 1,200-pound breaking-strength spec. For legacy systems where OEM is discontinued, the aftermarket equivalent is often the only practical path. We document which part we are proposing and why, with the casting number or spec sheet attached to the written quote.

Signs Your Genie Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing

Signs Your Genie Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing
  • Door hangs crooked or one side drops faster. The cable on the failing side has lost tension, either from fraying and stretching or from the drum developing a worn groove that lets the cable slip. This puts uneven load on the door sections and the opener’s trolley carriage.
  • Loud grinding or clicking from the opener head during travel. The motor is straining against a cable that is binding on a cracked drum hub or crossing over itself because the drum flanges are worn. The opener’s logic board may eventually throw an error code or burn out the motor from overload.
  • Visible fraying, rust, or broken strands on the cable. Aircraft cable fails from the inside out; surface rust in Oakland’s marine-influenced climate accelerates internal corrosion, especially on doors facing the bay where morning fog lingers. Five broken strands in one rope lay means replacement, not repair.
  • Cable has slipped off the drum and is dangling loose. This usually means the drum’s retaining groove is worn past spec or the cable was improperly tensioned during a previous service. The door is now running on a single cable, which bends the track and stresses the remaining hardware.
  • Door slams shut on one side or reverses erratically. The opener’s force settings, calibrated for balanced load, detect the sudden imbalance and trigger the safety reverse. The limit switch may also read incorrectly because the door is not reaching its programmed stop points squarely.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Oakland, Genie cable replacement alone runs $130-$250 installed; cable plus drum replacement, when the drum is grooved, cracked, or has a damaged hub bearing, runs $180-$340. The range reflects door height (longer cable), whether the job requires two technicians for a heavy wood door, and whether the failed cable has caused secondary damage to the bottom bracket or track alignment.

Every quote itemizes parts and labor separately per Clause 1 of The Haven Standard. The cable is 7×19 galvanized aircraft-rated wire; the drum is cast aluminum with a steel bushing, OEM or spec-matched aftermarket. Labor includes releasing and resetting torsion spring tension to install the cable safely, inspecting the opposite-side cable and drum, and testing opener force and limit settings before we leave.

The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the work. If the cable slips, the drum cracks, or the door drifts out of balance within a year, we make it right. The photo record from the visit, delivered by text or email, shows the failed part before replacement and the installed assembly afterward.

There is a safe middle ground here, and then there is a hard stop. An owner can visually inspect the cable for fraying and confirm the model number from the opener label without risk. What you cannot safely do is release the torsion spring tension to thread a new cable onto the drum. The spring stores enough kinetic energy to cause serious injury or death if the winding bars slip, and Genie’s screw-drive systems in particular require precise cable length to set the opener’s internal limit switches correctly.

We have responded to DIY attempts in Oakland where the cable was routed backward through the bottom bracket, where the drum was installed with the hub facing out and chewed the track in three cycles, and where a homeowner used a come-along to hold tension and bent the door section. The cost to fix the secondary damage exceeded the original repair quote. Name the part. Quote the number. Do the work. That’s the sequence for a reason.
